CBR First Deputy Chairman Andrei Kozlov was assassinated last night. Kozlov was brought to Moscow Hospital No. 33, where he died of heavy wounds. The Moscow Prosecutors office has initiated a criminal proceedings investigation into the attempt on Kozlovs life (Article 30 of the Russian Criminal Code) and murder (Article 105 of the Russian Criminal Code). All leads are being investigated. Kozlov was in charge of bank supervision at the Central Bank of Russia. Observers point it out that it is a conflict-ridden sphere, in which Kozlov always advocated tough measures. Thus, he had seen to it that the law «On Deposit Insurance» be passed. In the last few years the CBR has actively been withdrawing bank licenses for failure to comply with the law on countering money-laundering.
